Ever since I purchased Chanel’s Dragon, and used it for the first time, I wanted to find the next comparable product since Dragon was discontinued. The texture, the color and the wear of Dragon are SO amazing (there is a GOOD reason it’s Temptalia’s Favorite!) but I only bought one so I use it sparingly. That’s why whenever a liquid lipstick, or lip lacquer, or lip creme get released or promoted on Sephora or anywhere else online, I pretty immediately check them out. One I have on my list,  Beaute’s Masochist Lip Creme, was the inspiration for starting this search.
The two I have to show today, and the first two that I bought in hopes that it’d be similar, one of the new Bite Beauty Honey Lip Lacquer’s and one of the Shiseido Lacquer Rouges.

Bite Beauty Honey Lip Lacquer – Aurora

 First, here’s Sephora’s description:

What it is:
A high-shine, long-lasting waterproof lip lacquer made with pure manuka honey.

What it does:
With its unique blend of emollient oils and waxes, Honey Lip Lacquer is 99 percent natural and contains 5 mg of Resveratrol, offering antiaging benefits to smooth fine lines and wrinkles with every application. Manuka honey’s humectant (water-absorbing) properties provide extended eight-hour, moisture-rich wear and water-proofing benefits.

The product comes packaged in a small glass, squared tube with a matte rubbery lid. The applicator is a doe foot applicator.
When you open this product you immediately know the consistency, which is a fairly sticky and thick. I mention this because you’re going to want to be careful when you open it so you don’t get anything on your pants or surrounding area.
I bought the color Aurora because on the swatch on Sephora’s website, it was the darkest red, and was blue-toned and looked very rich. In reality, it’s more pink toned, like OPI’s Malaga Wine nail polish. The swatch above is next to Mac’s Moxie lipstick, which is why it doesn’t look pink at all, and the product photographs very red, but believe me. It’s not that red in person. I’m not saying it’s pink, but it’s not as truly red as it looks above.
Applying it wasn’t difficult, again just be aware of the consistency. It goes on very opaque and has a glossy finish. It lasted pretty long on me, although it didn’t completely last through eating. It isn’t uncomfortable on the lip either.
These are available for $24 on Sephora and come in 5 shades, one of which is Ruby, and one of which is Cardinal, both colors that I’d totally love to purchase after seeing them in person. Overall I do really like this product, as a very opaque lip color, but it’s NOT comparable to Chanel’s Dragon (which was the purpose of buying it). I also totally plan on wearing it a ton this fall 🙂

Next is Shiseido’s Lacquer Rouge. I’m fairly familiar with Shiseido as a brand because my mother has a few products from them, and one is her signature perfume my father gave her YEARS ago. I’ve never used or really seen any of the cosmetics they had though so when I saw this I was much more excited than when I saw the Bite Beauty product.

Shiseido Lacquer Rouge – RD501

Here’s Sephora’s Description:

What it is:
A rich liquid lipstick that leaves lips as smooth as lacquer.

What it does:
Inspired by Japanese lacquerware, one coat of this luxurious formula provides intense color and deep luster. The applicator fits closely against the lips for a comfortable and even application that does not bleed. Lacquer Rouge improves dry, rough, or peeling lips with continued use, leaving them smooth and deeply moisturized.

This was much closer in texture to the Chanel. It’s truly a lip creme texture that has a very glossy, lacquer like finish. There’s no sort of stickiness in the product.
Packaging is simple (and very Japanese) in a black glossy tube. The product has a doe foot applicator.
It applies very opaque. The photo above is Shiseido’s swatch on the left and Bite Beauty on the right. You can see that RD501 is much more red toned, and a richer color.
These retail for $25 at Sephora and I think mainly sold online (my Sephora doesn’t have these in stock). There are 8 colors to choose from, from neutral to reds and one bright pink.

Shiseido & Bite Beauty, natural light – just to see the finish

Here are the swatches next to some lipsticks (Mac By Request). I organized them from darkest to pinkest, left to right. These are in natural light and this is just to reference the colors in context of where it lays on the red-spectrum. Order is Shiseido, Bite Beauty, Mac Moxie, Mac Candy Yum Yum.

This last photo is just to show you how they stain. This is after considerable rubbing with a Yes To Cucumbers makeup wipe. Look! I pretty much find that if they’re supposed to be opaque lipsticks, they should stain, so it’s a good sign for me 🙂
