I didn’t do a Summer Polish video last year because… well I do way too many Nail Polish related videos and posts. I realized though that I have quite a few polishes in my collection that are specifically perfect for summer, and I have quite a few new polishes that were specifically released for this summer.
So, Summer Nail Polish video/post it is.
Just some themes that I like for summer: Neons, Brights, Shimmers and Glitters. Neons are self-explanatory. There’s really no other time to wear neons… It’s weird to wear neon pink on your nails when you’re walking around in the snow. Brights, I like from spring through the end of summer just because it’s a general sunny-feeling sort of deal. Shimmers and Glitters I wear year-round but I particularly like them in the summer because they look fantastic under water.
I also did a quick summer nail tutorial, which (obviously) you can see at the end of the video. It looks like this though (color is a bit off since I only managed to snap a cell phone pic of it):
It was inspired by
So, here is the list! Enjoy!
Color Club Twiggie
This is actually one of the orange nail polishes I used for my SF Giants/Halloween Nail Polish
post way back in October. It’s extremely vibrant and neon. It’s a darker neon orange though, not so… mac and cheese orange. I prefer a more red orange though since It goes better with my skin tone. Since it’s a neon, it applies moderately sheer on the nail. 2 coats suffices though. It dries pretty fast and doesn’t streak.
As most neons do, it dries matte, so I put a top coat on the right side of the swatch. If there’s every a shiny bit in a neon polish swatch, then it’s because there’s a top coat on half of it.
China Glaze Flip Flop FantasyThis is from last year’s Pool Party collection for the summer by China Glaze. It’s a neon coral color. It’s much more vibrant and neon in real life. A smidge lighter as well. This is opaque in 2, but can be slightly streaky so a third coat fixes that.
China Glaze Pool PartyThis is also from the same collection as Flip Flop Fantasy. It’s just a bright, neon pink without any hints of creme in it (which I’m mentioning because one of my neons does). It’s another very sheer color so at least 3 coats is needed. You can see in the swatch that in the first coat that the polish is kind of streaky. I normally use 4 coats when I use it.
Color Club Jackie Oh!Color wise this is very similar to China Glaze’s Pool Party. The formula is much better though. In general, neons dry quickly, are sheer so multiple coats are needed, and they dry matte. They can be slightly streaky. The formula for this is on the more opaque side for neons, and doesn’t streak. China Glaze’s Pool Party was at least a 4 coat nail polish, where as this can be 2 to 3 coats.
Color Club PoptasticThis is a lighter shade of pink and also has a touch of creme to it. It’s still a very vibrant, bright color and pretty much a neon but there’s a creme-y brightness not a straight neon brightness. Because of the touch of creme it is opaque with 2 coats.
Color Club Warhol
This is a deeper shade of pink than Jackie Oh!, and it’s also slightly warmer. Other than that, formula wise it’s the same.
Color Club Mrs. Robinson
This is a bright, warm purple neon. I guess it’s more like a purple mixed with magenta to get a sort of fuchsia like color. This is opaque in 2 to 3 coats. This, Jackie Oh!, Poptastic and Warhol were all from the Poptastic Collection.
Color Club Rebel DebutanteThis was from Color Club’s Fall collection from 2009 (I think) called Rebel Debutante. The rest of the collection were all very predictably fall colors – muted, grayed out. This is a neon green. Why it was part of the collection? I have no clue. It’s opaque in 2 to 3 coats.
Hot Topic Color Change Nail PolishThis is the only Hot Topic nail polish I have. It’s in a bottle that’s very reminiscent of Gap’s old nail polishes and Eyeko’s old nail polishes which looks like a little bottle. This color changing polish goes from teal to… a turquoise? I’ve actually never done the color changing part yet, since I haven’t used it yet. It’s a very pretty teal as an original base though. It dries slightly matte – more like a satin. It’s pretty opaque, 2 coats is perfect, one almost if you don’t care about your nail being completely colored over.
Color Club Chelsea GirlThis is also from Color Club’s Poptastic collection. This is a bright, sheer blue color. It’s really, quite sheer. It needs at least 4 or 5 coats. It’s very non-creme. It’s quite unique because of that factor.
OPI No Room For The BluesThis is one of OPI’s most popular bright shades. It’s a bright creme blue. It’s very opaque as well. 2 coats is perfect.
OPI Who The Shrek Are You?
First off, I apologize for the chip on the swatch. I dropped the wheel right before I took the photo.
I’ve talked about this color plenty of times
– formula wise and color wise. I just think it’s a great color for summer. It reminds me of picnics. And of ice cream because of the Shrek ice cream Baskin Robbins released way long ago.
Sinful Colors Call You Later
Of all the polishes in this post, this is probably the most in-expensive of the lot. It’s a drugstore brand, found in Walgreens and although some of the polishes they have are terrible this one is quite unique. It’s a green glitter in a clear base but has a very nice ensemble of glitter. There are very very small gold glitters, medium sized medium green glitters and then bigger dark glitters. It’s gorgeous. It’s great for layering as well as can be worn on it’s own.
China Glaze Lemon Fizz
This is a creme pastel yellow. I like yellow for summer. It’s bright and sunny. Like summer lol. This was originally from China Glaze’s Up Up and Away collection for spring last year, which was all pastels. It’s opaque in 2 to 3 coats.
Color Club Almost Famous
This is the only truly yellow polish I have. It’s very opaque as well. It’s a creme and one coat almost suffices. It’s fantastic. The best part about Color Club is that it’s also very inexpensive as well.
OPI In My Back Pocket
This is a bright orange creme, also very opaque. This is another more orange red, OPI makes some more yellow reds but again, I hate the way they look on me. This is nothing too exciting, but I find that I only want to use it in the summer, or the week surrounding Halloween.
Essie Cute As A Button
This is one of my favorite Essie colors. It’s a coral pink that’s fairly opaque and is perfect for summer. It’s great for the toes and I LOVE wearing it to the beach. The color of the polish against the sand or the color of the sky is just the epitome of summer to me.
Orly Retro Red
This was from the Plastix collection that was released last year in the midst of the huge matte craze. It’s not a complete matte, hence “plastic” finish. It’s more of a satin, or basically non-glossy plastic like computer keyboards. The color, after a topcoat is put on it, is a very beautiful slightly corally red with a hint of orange to it. It’s coming up in pictures as more of a red but there is a slight orange to it. This is opaque in 2 coats.
OPI Cajun Shrimp
This is very reminiscent to Mac’s Scorcher from their To The Beach collection. It’s a coral red with again, a hint of orange. Another typical summer color.
OPI Strawberry Margarita
This is a warm toned bright pink creme. Slightly on the streaky sheer side with 2 coats but the 3rd coat makes it perfect. It’s a fun fun pink.
OPI I’m Indi-A Mood For Love
This is a cool toned bright pink. This is more subdued and for those of you that want a bright pink but want either a cool toned pink instead of a warm one, or if you want a more subdued pink then this is for you. It’s also very opaque, 2 coats is sufficient.
This, and the next Zoya colors that are cremes are all from the Zoya Summertime collection
which was one of their 3 summer collections. It’s slightly bluer and darker than the previous OPI color. It’s very pigmented and again, another color for those of you that don’t like the crazy pink colors.
There were 2 purples in the collection and this is the pinker, warmer one. The other I would choose for fall more than summer. This is also very opaque. It’s also a color I’d probably wear if I were going out at night.
This is a bright, but slightly dusty, blue creme. 2 coats is perfect. It’s closer to the bottle color, but not as light.
This is my favorite of the Summertime collection. This is a BRIGHT, tomato creme. It’s got a slight jelliness to it but it’s not a jelly. It’s also the theme color for my summer nail tutorial.
This and the next 2 colors are from the Zoya Sunshine collection
, which are very reminiscent to my favorite Sparkle collection from last year. It’s a nice orange with gold shimmer. Reminds me of orange soda.
This is a light pink with gold shimmer. In the bottle it looks like a salmon pink shimmer, but on the nail the difference between the base color and the shimmer really come through.
This is the one I was most looking forward to in the collection but this didn’t turn out as my favorite. It reminds me of apple candy. It’s an apple green with gold shimmer. Gorgeous, but I think Rica or Tanzy ended up as my favorites.
The next colors are from the Sparkle Collection
. I’m not going to give details about them because I’ve gone over them SO many times, so here are just swatches!
