For the past month and a half, I’ve been all about foundations. The perfect foundation. The one that keeps me non-shiny all day, that feels light on the skin but delivers great coverage, that provides great quality for money etc.
The first one that I purchased was the Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet +. I had heard fantastic things about this foundation and can really only agree with them.
My color is 40 (described as medium-light with yellow undertones). My only complaint about that is that it’s not printed on the bottle, and I hate when companies label by number (except for Mac because that still makes sense to me since they organize by skin tone as well as shade). But that’s such a minor thing for me that really, it doesn’t even register in my critique of the foundation.
It comes in a squeeze bottle, which I LOVE because it’s so easy to get the amount you want. In order for the squeeze tube to work though, the foundation itself has to be on the thicker side.

The formula itself is advertised to be a full coverage but very natural feeling foundation, which is something I completely agree with. When applied with a brush, the foundation is very easily buildeable from medium-full to full coverage. When applied with fingers, it’s more of a medium coverage. It doesn’t look or feel like you’re wearing anything though, which is my favorite part of the foundation.
It dries matte, obviously, and doesn’t make the skin itchy or dry like some matte foundations do. The wear is very good, as it lasted 12 hours for me, with mild weather, and lots of running around after children. With or without setting with a powder, the foundation still stayed matte all day and didn’t feel sticky at all throughout the day, as some foundations can do when you start to sweat or if it gets hot out.
They offer 16 shades from a very pale to also a very deep shade. I don’t know how the deeper shades compare or are useful in terms of other foundations… I know some brands like Laura Mercier don’t have the deepest shades available but I also don’t know how deep the Makeup Forever Mat Velvet is.
It retails for $34 at Sephora.
